JOB TITLE: Assistant Superintendent
REPORTS TO: Superintendent
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
The assistant superintendent is the direct supervisor of the maintenance, technology, and custodial staff. The superintendent may be assigned other responsibilities. Competent educational leadership is expected, while maintaining a relationship of mutual respect and confidence. The assistant superintendent should assist the superintendent in the broad aspects of personnel, maintenance, technology, custodial, buildings and grounds, capital projects, school safety and security, and school facilities. The assistant superintendent will assist the superintendent substantially and effectively in the task of providing leadership in developing, achieving and maintaining the best possible educational programs and services.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
Facilities/Buildings & Grounds:
- Prepares and evaluates board policies as they relate to maintenance and custodial staff and makes recommendations to the superintendent.
- Supervises all maintenance, and custodial staff and makes recommendations for hiring and dismissal.
- Attends board meetings and prepares reports for the Board of Education as requested.
- Supervises district maintenance, and custodial departments.
- Assigns work requests to the appropriately skilled maintenance or technology employee.
- Monitors the completion of maintenance requests in a timely manner.
- Monitors all automated systems district wide including HVAC, refrigeration, fire alarm and door access controls.
- Works in collaboration with building principals to supervise custodial departments.
- Plans and implements a summer cleaning schedule.
- Organizes and oversees custodial/summer student worker schedules.
- Regularly inspects buildings and grounds and works with principals to identify areas of concern.
- Leads the request for proposal (RFP) process for all projects while ensuring all aspects conform to board policy and state law for the bidding process.
- Assists in the evaluation of proposals and bids for materials, equipment, contracted repairs and services for the facility operations department.
- Oversee the maintenance, and custodial professional development program for the district.
- Researches and applies for various grants as they relate to the district including: FEMA, School Safety, Food Services, Technology, and USDA, etc…
- Facilitates short- and long-range planning which includes the construction, repair, renovation, relocation, etc. of district buildings and other facilities.
- Provides exceptional guidance to contractors, vendors, and district staff when involved in construction, repair, renovation, and relocation of district buildings and other facilities.
- Recruiting and retaining high-quality staff, as well as overseeing and directing the facilities of the school district.
- Managing custodial service, grounds maintenance, building maintenance and renovation (including construction) activities of the district.
- Plans, directs, controls, and monitors the implementation of facility maintenance, grounds maintenance and custodial operations of the school district. Assists in the research and purchase parts for repairs.
- Develops policies and procedures to ensure that building improvement activities provide economical school facilities that conform to building codes, government regulations, and educational requirements and make effective use of available space.
- Oversees and monitors annual operating and capital budgets for departmental activities.
- Initiates, plans, directs, and monitors construction.
- Coordinates and directs contact with architect and general contractor for warranties and job completion. Oversees projects to ensure compliance with specifications and deadlines.
- Oversees schedules and payment dispersals.
- Schedule work and inspect quality.
- Oversees budget as it applies to scope of work and order parts and equipment as required.
- Participates in the Short- and Long-Range Plan development which includes the construction, repair, and individual departments.
Safety/Security
- Supervises Emergency Management for safety and security for the district.
- Leads the District Crisis Team.
- Creates and regularly updates the District Crisis Plan.
- Networks with local Emergency Management Personnel to provide better safety and security for the district.
- Builds relationships with outside agencies to create a framework for rapid response.
- Plans active shooter trainings.
- Establishes master plan for all building emergency drills.
- Coordinates and monitors building fire, tornado, earthquake, intruder and other disaster drills.
- Leads professional development training annually as well as ongoing for all district substitute teachers.
- Acts as liaison to ensure physical security of facilities by installing and maintaining locks and access controls, and acts as liaison with local law enforcement authorities and Emergency Management for building security.
- Oversees and evaluates the School Resource Officers who work within the district.
- Oversees conditions pertaining to the safety and welfare of both students and staff as the safety liaison.
- Oversees building safety teams.
- Develops and oversees building-level and district-level Emergency Operations Plans
Technology:
- Prepares and evaluates board policies as they relate to technology staff and makes recommendations to the superintendent.
- Supervises all technology staff and makes recommendations for hiring and dismissal.

- Supervises district technology department.
- Assigns work requests to the appropriately skilled technology employee.
- Monitors the completion of technology requests in a timely manner.
- Supervises district technology maintenance and expansion.
- Assists in the evaluation of proposals and bids for materials, equipment, contracted repairs and services for the technology department.
- Oversees budget as it applies to scope of work and orders parts and equipment as required.
- Oversees the E-Rate program within the district.
- Oversees and monitors annual operating and capital budgets for departmental activities.
- Works with the technology of the district as the liaison between district and entities regarding technology.
- Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as assigned by the superintendent.
School Finance/Budget
- Assist the superintendent in the development and coordination of the sections of the budget that pertain to building maintenance, custodial, and facilities.
- Assist the superintendent in the development and coordination of the sections of the budget that pertain to district technology.
- Provide leadership in applying for various grants as would fall under the supervisory responsibilities of the Assistant Superintendent.
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: Terms of contract determined by Board of Education.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to be mobile between buildings.
EVALUATION: Evaluated annually by Superintendent.
TYPE OF POSITION: Exempt
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT AND SALARY: Individuals in this position will be employed by contract in accordance with State Statutes and the provisions of the Certified Employee Salary Schedule.
